- VUse the Paragraph Format window to create paragraph formats that you
- ll store in the
- Catalog. Paragraph formats allow documents to have a consistent style and look.

- TIn the Paragraph Format window, choose Tabs from the Properties pop-up menu and set
- the following properties.
- RTab Stops
- Click an item in the scroll list to edit it. Click New Tab Stop to
- create a new tab stop.
- ODelete
- Click to delete the tab stop selected in the Tab Stops scroll list.
- Click to assign the Position, Leader, and Alignment settings to the
- ,item selected in the Tab Stops scroll list.
- STab Properties
- Position is the tab
- s distance from the column
- s left edge.
- Alignment is how text is aligned at the tab stop.
- Leader is the character for a continuous pattern between the tab
- 0symbol and the first character at the tab stop.
- Decimal Character is the character used for decimal alignment.

- The Paragraph Format window
- TThe Paragraph Format window has two main areas. The left side has the Paragraph Tag
- Xtext box, the Properties pop-up menu, and the Apply To area. When you choose a property 0
- Xfrom the Properties pop-up menu, the properties appear on the right side of the window.
- For help with a paragraph
- property, choose a property
- from the Properties pop-up
- menu above.

- Using the Paragraph Format window
- (To create or modify a paragraph format:
- WClick in the paragraph you want to change or use as a starting point for a new format.
- 'Choose Paragraph from the Format menu.
- YThe Paragraph Format window appears, showing the
- proper
- of the paragraph
- !containing the insertion point.
- UIf you select more than one paragraph, the properties that differ appear as follows: ,
- Lpop-up menus contain As Is, check boxes are gray, and text boxes are empty.
- TTo display a format
- s properties (rather than those of the current paragraph), hold
- 3down Option and click the format in the
- Catalog.
- 6Change the properties in the Paragraph Format window.
- PSpecify how you want to apply the changes by turning on the check boxes in the
- TApply To area. If you want to store the format in the
- Catalog, type a tag for the
- &format in the Paragraph Tag text box.

- DWith rulers displayed, you can create, move, and delete tab stops.
- Do this:

- Click below the ruler.

- Drag the tab stop along the ruler.

- XAfter you change a tab stop, use the Paragraph Format window to apply tab stop settings
- (to the Catalog and to other paragraphs.

- TIn the Paragraph Format window, choose Advanced from the Properties pop-up menu and
- set the following properties.

- Controls hyphenation. To turn on hyphenation, turn on the Hyphenate

- properties. For help with changing a

- s hyphenation points, click

- Specifies the language to be used for hyphenating and spell-checking
- =the paragraph. To prevent FrameMaker from spell checking and
- =hyphenating a paragraph, choose None from the Language menu.

- Specifies how tightly to pack words on a line. Spacing is a percentage
- ?of the standard word spacing for the paragraph
- s default font.
- To add space between characters in justified paragraphs, turn on
- FAllow Automatic Letter Spacing. If a line is more loosely spaced than
- ;the Maximum setting, and you have this setting turned on,
- ;FrameMaker adds a small amount of space between letters to
- improve the word spacing.

- Using the keyboard to apply a format
- 0To apply a paragraph format using the keyboard:
- CClick in the paragraph you want to change and press Command-space.
- The Tag area changes to
- ?Start typing the format name until it appears in the Tag area.
- PType only enough letters to identify the format. You also can press one letter
- Frepeatedly to scroll through the formats that begin with that letter.
- OYou can also use the Up Arrow or Down Arrow key to scroll through the formats.
- #To apply the format, press Return.
- NTo cancel applying a format, press Control-C or click in the document window.
- KFor keyboard shortcuts used to format a paragraph, click

- UIn the Paragraph Format window, choose Basic from the Properties pop-up menu and set
- the following properties.

- The available font families.
- The pop-up menu contains standard font sizes. You can type a font (
- 8size from 4 to 400 points, including a fractional size.

- The settings available for each font family.
- Variation
- Style
- These settings enable you to change text. For example:

- superscript
- subscript
- outline

- You can also put change bars beside paragraphs and kern character
- 5pairs. You can assign more than one style at a time.

- Use this setting to assign a spot color to a paragraph format. For help

- Positive values move characters apart; negative values move them on
- 6together. The value is a percentage of the font size.

- Whether FrameMaker will use a bitmap font or print with outline
- 1quality when printing the font to a LaserWriter.
- Numbering properties
- UIn the Paragraph Format window, choose Numbering from the Properties pop-up menu and r
- set the following properties.
- Autonumber
- An autonumber format is a combination of text that you type and nti
- SFormat
- building blocks that you select in the Building Blocks scroll list. Use . F
- autonumbering to create numbered lists, section numbers, and e
- graphs that begin or end with a text string. See the report, val
- outline, and book templates for sample autonumber formats.
- To keep different numbering series from interacting, precede the
- ?format with a single character label and a colon. For example, erW
- ET:<n+1> for a series of Table Name headings and F:<n+1> for a series
- of Figure Name headings.
- To specify paragraph numbering for a file in a book, select the file in r
- ;the book window and choose Set Up File from the File menu.

- Building Blocks
- Most building blocks are formats that specify whether a counter is ed
- alphabetic or numeric:
- Numeric (1, 2, 3, 4)
- Alphabetic (A, B, C, D)
- alphabetic (a, b, c, d)
- Roman (I, II, III, IV)
- roman (i, ii, iii, iv)
- LTo use the current value of a counter, use one of the counters shown above.
- To start a counter at a specific value, include the value in the counter format. For a
- *example, <n=3> starts the counter at
- To increment the counter, use the counter format with a plus sign. For example, <A+> i
- .means add 1 to the corresponding <A> counter.
- To insert a tab stop, use \t

- Character
- Specifies the character format for the autonumbers. The format you

- Indicates where the autonumber should appear.
